Tribal ProfileThere are three separate and distinct subdivisions (Governing Bodies) within the Passamaquoddy Tribe. In the United States the Passamaquoddy Tribe is represented by the Joint Tribal Council of the Passamaquoddy Tribe, with separate councils at the Pleasant Point (Sipayik) and the Indian Township (Motahkomikuk) Reservations. And in Canada the Passamaquoddy Tribe is represented by the Tribal Chief and Council St. Croix Schoodic Band located at St. Andrews, NB (Qonasqamkuk). The St. Croix River (previously known as the Passamaquoddy River and the Schoodic River) serves as the International boundary line between the USA and Canada. This boundary cuts through the middle of the Passamaquoddy Ancestral Homeland. The Passamaquoddy have occupied this Ancestral Homeland which includes the St Croix River watershed region for well over 600+ generations (12,000+ years). This new USA-Canada boundary line was created about 200 years ago under the Jay Treaty and was imposed on the Passamaquoddy People. Since time immemorial Passamaquoddies have lived on both sides of this river and today the Passamaquoddies continue to live on both sides of the river. The Chief of the St Croix - Schoodic Band currently resides at Qonasqamkuk. The Governing Body for Pleasant Point is the Tribal Governor, Lieutenant Governor and Council. The Pleasant Point Tribal Office is open for business Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. A total of 3,464 tribal members are listed on the tribal census rolls with 2,106 listed on Pleasant Point census and 1,369 on the Indian Township census.
